Critical information: Julie is the daughter of the goddess Nemain and George Smith, Captain Airstrip One, conceived following an interesting week at Roma's Citadel in Avalon. Her father explains the situation to his contact, O'Brien, back in London who decides that it would be plusgood for Captain Airstrip One to have a child reared to be the example of perfect Party following. O'Brien arranges for the appropriate documentation, even creating a wife for George who exists entirely on paper. When Julie (named Námhaid by her mother at birth, then renamed by O'Brien) is born, she is delivered to her father and given Oceanic citizenship under the falsified parental documents, assigned 9716 Smith J as her information.
With O'Brien's encouragement, Julie is raised both in Avalon and Airstrip One where she learns both the ways of her mother's people and the strict doctrine of Ingsoc. However, on the eve of her reaching age of majority, Julie's father discovers that O'Brien and the Inner Party have nefarious plans for her. In the only act of thoughtcrime or disobedience in his life he ships Julie off to her mother in the middle of the night with the directive that she is never, ever, ever to return to Airstrip One, to Oceania, or even the dimension they live in, leaving Julie stuck in Avalon trying to figure out where she belongs.
